Getting In

Occasionally when I travel I get a free pass to enjoy airline lounges in the airport.  These are nice quiet spots to relax, get something eat, get a cold drink or even do some business.  I’m sure you’ve seen these places if you’ve ever walked through the concourses of an airport.  They’re usually behind an opulent front door that magically opens when you approach.  But once you walk through the door, you will always be met by a friendly person asking you for your membership card or pass.  If you try to get in without one of these, you’ll be asked to leave.  If you have one of them, you get in.

People will often say that there are many ways to get in to heaven.  But think about it.  If you get into heaven, wherever that is, it will be because someone lets you in, or that anyone can get in.  If anyone can get in, then it’s not special.  It’s like wandering the concourses of the airport.  All passengers can do that.  But if it’s an exclusive place, someone has to let you in.  Will they accept any old reason for letting you in?  Aren’t they going to let you in because you fulfilled their requirement?  What if you show up upon your death, ready to enter and whoever is there says you followed the wrong rules?  Would they have a variety of rules for letting you in so that you can do what you want to get in?  Wouldn’t they have the right to exclude you?  After all, it’s their heaven.

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).  If the Father is in heaven, he must be who sets the rules for entry.  Jesus is like that person at the door of the airport lounge.  You don’t get in unless he says so.  There isn’t any other way.  To go through Jesus means you have to repent of your sin and be born again.  Those are the rules.  No sin in heaven.

So, if you’re one of these people that bristles at the idea that there is ONLY one way to get in to heaven, maybe the problem isn’t the path; it’s the destination.  Where do you think you’re going when you die?  Maybe you think that you can pick your idea of heaven, pick your path to get there and presto!, you’re there.  Seems to me that makes you god.

But, if there’s really only ONE heaven, then it’s reasonable to think that only ONE way to get in.  People formulate their idea of heaven based on what they’re taught.  They follow various religious books, or organizations.  But which one is right?  How will you decide?  For me, it’ boiled down to which religion has a leader who has beat death?  There’s only one.  All other religious systems were founded by people who are dead.  Jesus is the only person even purported to have beaten death.  If what the bible says is true, then he is still alive, and when you die you are going to meet him.  He’ll ask you if you have a pass to get in.  There’s only one way.  It’s through him.

Now, if you’re one of those people that think there is NO heaven of any kind and that when you die you are dead and that’s it, this post is not for you.  If you’re right, you won’t know it.  Neither will anyone else.  If you’re wrong – well, oops.  For the rest of us looking for a path to heaven, consider the words of Jesus, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

So next time you’re walking around the airport and you come across one of those airport lounges, I hope you have a pass to get in. They’re really nice.  When you die and you try to get in to heaven, will you have a pass to get in?  I pray you do.
